Comedy Improv Shows
The Bay Area has been home to some of the nation’s best comedy improv.
The seminal troupe: the Committee performed and practiced in the Bay Area. Gary Austin, founder of the Groundlings started his improv work and theater work in the Bay Area. Many of the early Bay Area improv teachers studied directly with Viola Spolin or her son Paul Sills (founding director of Second City).
Some of the more popular Bay Area Improv Troupes include:
Pan Theater’s Awkward Face and the Afters.
Offering weekly shows at 8pm on and 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
Crisis Hopkins Sketch and Improv Troupe
Five Play – the hip South Bay Troupe
Piano Fight (not improv but we like them).
And many other great troupes.
If you are considering studying, or performing improv see as many shows as you can. You’ll learn as much from the shows that don’t hit the mark, as the one’s that do.
