What is improv?

Improv is performing without a script. Getting on stage, or otherwise in front of a live audience without knowing the dialogue of the piece. Basic improv techniques, games and exercises help performers practice how to build scenes, characters and plays from a word, idea or theme.

Improv troupes use the various tools of improv theater to perform short scenes, play games, or perform monologues. Performers can also use the techniques to create longer pieces that range from fifteen minutes to two hours based on a single word or idea taken from the audience.

What is Intro to Improv?

Intro to Improv is a two hour improv comedy acting class taught by members of Pan Thater’s Awkward Face improv troupe. The class includes theater games and exercises that introduce those new to improv to the basics of agreement, elements of a scene, and finding and playing the game.

The class is taught with classic improv theater games and modern acting exercises designed to help those new to improv get out their heads and into the space and moment. The class focuses on learning by doing.

There is no need, or pressure to be funny, or witty. We approach it from an organic perspective allowing the funny, or dramatic to happen. Many members of Pan’s main performing groups started their improv training with Intro to Improv.

Intro to Improv is the San Francisco Bay Area’s favorite drop-in improv class.
